Mid-Week Ride April 2023

John Earp has sent this report.  Photographs and short video clip links below the text. Eddy

As arranged we all gathered in the central Tutbury car park ready for a 10.30am start.
Mick Leach had kindly offered to lead the run as Bill Mantle’s wife has been poorly but is apparently gaining strength every day now.  Andy Roberts was to be back man on his CB500X.
After a quick check from Mick that we all knew how the drop-off system worked we were on our way.  We turned right out of the car park past Tutbury castle towards Sudbury Hall.  We crossed over the A50 at Doveridge then onwards towards Roston and Ellastone then wound along Wootton Lane that runs down the side of the Alton Towers resort where we joined the main road right next to the Alton Towers main entrance near Farley.
From here we carried on a few miles until we crossed the A52 and the A523 towards The Winking Man pub.  From this road we had fantastic views and stopped for a brief rest and take photographs.  After the short break, we resumed our ride on the A53 and stopped at the Flash Bar Cafe and Shop for a very welcome lunch break.  I must have misheard the lady when I was ordering my pasty as I thought I’d ordered a Cornish pasty but received a massive pasty that covered my plate, it was delicious but I did share it with Steve Hollis.

Now we were refreshed we returned to our bikes and Mick led us down a road that must run parallel to the A515 towards Hollinsclough, eventually ending up in Hartington and incidentally I now knew where I was again!!   Next, straight through Hartington towards Hulme End, turning left by the pub.  I thought Mick was taking us down the tunnel to Wetton Mill but no, we carried straight on to Alstonfield cutting across the A515 toward Yeaveley then onto Long Lane, Sutton Lane to Hatton and back to Tutbury.  My total mileage (from home) was just over 86 miles and I filled my CB500X up with 4.5 liters of Esso E5 (no ethanol) on my way home. We’d all had a lovely day and thanks again to Mick for arranging the run at short notice, Andy our back man and everyone who came along on the run it was another great day out and it didn’t rain.   John Earp.
